Wow, what a day! It started off so well. I woke up early, busting with energy, so I went outside in the sun and got all of the outside preparations done: weeding, cleaning etc. Then it was inside for some more cleaning, wrote up a quick blog post, the kids were playing or watching TV. Then I ran up to the store for some last minute essentials (after making sure to sweep and mop, what little did I know). Came home, did a few more last minute prep things, laid Emily down. Then fixed the pasta salad, had a quick snack, cleaned the bathrooms.
Then it started raining, no biggie I thought, I don't need to start cooking until 1, this rain will pass by then right? Dennis & Megan stopped by watched the rain, then went down to Territory Days when it looked like things might lighten up. But the rain did not lighten up, no, not by a long shot.
So I went downstairs, just to check and see if we had any dampness from the rain. I guess it was a good thing I did, because I discovered that the water was pooling along the wall, worst I have seen in several years. And I kind of lost it, I started yelling, cursing, frantically moving furniture. I called Kim to let her know what was going on, she attempted to be the voice of reason, to no avail. I started sucking up water, while telling those people who called that the event was toast, very wet soggy toast.
Kim got home and forced me to calm down as we got the top pool of water sucked up. Then we stopped working on that and I started cooking, yes grilling in the rain:
Kim's family showed up, along with my parents, and eventually my sister Melodie. And we ate an excellent feast. And we played some ladder ball in the driveway because it was the only part of the yard that wasn't covered in mud. Kim got a fire going in the fire pit. And we ended up having a pretty decent time, the kids played in the water and mud, and with the fire, and eventually got to have s'mores. Overall it wasn't a bad event, it could have been much much worse. Once again my in-laws demonstrated their facility with the technique of turning lemons into lemonade.
To everyone who missed it, I am sorry we missed you, although I cannot guarantee you would have had fun. And to those I actually spoke to: sorry if I sounded a little harried or short, I was pretty stressed out. And we will have more barbecues this coming summer (because our lawn will need the rain hee hee).
