My Father the Hero

Dear James, Daniel and Emily,

When I was a little boy I had heroes,
Like most little kids:
Jim West, James Bond, Batman,
My Dad

As I grew older, became a teenager,
My heroes changed as I changed:
Jim Morrison, Magic Johnson, Che Guevara,
My Dad

As time went by I grew up, became a man,
And again my heroes changed:
Ronald Reagan, Henry Rollins, Hunter S. Thompson,
My Dad

In time I got married, had kids of my own,
and once again my heroes changed:
Barack Obama, My wife, My kids,
My Dad

And now as he turns 70 I realize one thing,
I have changed, the world has changed,
My heroes have changed, save one,
The greatest hero of all:
My Dad
